Historically, the role of the public sector in hotel development was largely restricted to ensuring a smooth planning process.

However, as local authorities are feeling the pinch from a decline in central government funding, and that hotels can deliver not only much need commercial revenue, but wider ‘place-making benefits to an area, it is now increasingly common for the public sector to either fund or own a hotel.

GVA have been involved in a number of recent public sector hotel projects. Here, we look at the background to local authority intervention in the UK; the models being used, who is doing it and the key to success.
